Speakers' Bios
Mike Brooks, Venture Executive, Chevron Technology Ventures Investments (CTVI)
Mike Brooks has more than 25 years of experience in a wide range of areas including: chemical plant operations management; refinery planning and scheduling; distributed control and instrumentation project implementation; advanced control application development; as well as development of process information management systems and graphical user interface products. He also has 12-years experience with various software companies including director of products and technology at Wonderware. Brooks was also co-founder of INDX where he led marketing and product development efforts for the model-based visualization product that he invented. Brooks focuses on software architecture technologies to support operational activities for all Chevron refineries and the company's supply chain. Brooks is currently a board member for the Manufacturing Enterprise Systems Association and User Council chair of the OpenO&M initiative that drives interoperability standards for manufacturing.

Brooks earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Bradford University in the United Kingdom.

Deborah Magid, Director, Software Strategy, IBM Venture Capital Group
Deborah Magid is Director of Strategic Alliances in IBM's Venture Capital Group, representing IBM's software business. Deborah builds ecosystems for IBM by sharing insights about emerging markets, technologies, and business models with venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. As a member of IBM's software strategy team, she also brings insight form the venture community into the development of IBM's growth strategies, identifies new business opportunities with portfolio companies, and shares views on innovation and growth areas of the market. Deborah is a frequent spokesperson on topics of relevance to entrepreneurs and investors, and is on the board of SDForum, the Silicon Valley emerging technology network. Previously, Deborah held various positions in marketing and product design and development at IBM, Taligent, GE and AT&T. Deborah holds degrees in cognitive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Connecticut.

Steve Vassallo, Venture Partner, Foundation Capital
As a Venture Partner at Foundation Capital, Steve's primary focus is on new opportunities in Cleantech. An entrepreneur who lives at the intersection of business, technology, and design, Steve has spent the last 14 years launching and building a broad array of successful companies and products. Steve currently serves on the board of directors of SunRun and is actively involved with Purfresh, Serious Materials, and VaST Systems. Steve also serves as an advisor to the Aquaya Institute, a nonprofit research and consulting firm focused on bringing safe water innovations to vulnerable populations. Prior to joining Foundation Capital in 2007, Steve helped launch Ning, a consumer Internet service where anyone can create his or her own social network for anything. Prior to Ning, Steve was Director of Mechanical Engineering at Immersion, a development and licensing firm that pioneered tactile feedback and human touch technology. Prior to Immersion, Steve was a project leader and design engineer at IDEO, where he developed more than a dozen successful products for market leading companies including Cisco, Nike, BMW, Steelcase, McDonalds, and Caterpillar. Steve holds more than 20 patents and has received numerous product awards including Business Week Design of the Decade Award, IDEA99 Gold and Bronze Awards, NeoCon Gold and Most Innovative New Product Awards. Steve earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar. When Steve is able to break away from brainstorming the next big idea, he enjoys building Lego robots with his two children and bicycling through the Palo Alto foothills with his wife and best friend, Trae.

Evan Goldman, Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Environmental Business Clustser (EBC)
Evan Goldman manages the Environmental Business Cluster (EBC) and serves as its Entrepreneur-in-Residence, providing EBC "start-up" executives with mentoring and strategic counsel on corporate planning, funding and development. In addition, Mr. Goldman supports Prescience International as in-house Strategic Business Counsel. Mr. Goldman is both a California and Israeli attorney who has held numerous legal and business positions for U.S. and Israeli based technology companies and law firms. Prior to joining the EBC and Prescience, Mr. Goldman led the legal department of BrightSource Energy (utility-scale solar thermal power plants), where he negotiated preferred stock financings totaling over $160 million, processed a large DOE loan guarantee application, and was responsible for all strategic and commercial agreements. Before that, he served in corporate development and legal roles for InsureWorx (insurance claims and policy management systems), Virtual Ports (laproscopy systems), Magnolia Broadband (fabless semiconductor wireless solutions), Rainfinity/EMC (firewall and storage software solutions), Heller Ehrman (San Francisco and Silicon Valley based law firm), ViryaNet (mobile field service solutions), Shraga Biran & Co. (Israeli based law firm), Elop/Elbit Systems (electro-optics products and systems), Fried Frank (New York and Washington D.C. based law firm), and Bezeq (Israeli national telecommunications service provider). Mr. Goldman received his Masters in International Business Law from the American University (Washington, D.C.) and his Bachelor of Law from the Hebrew University (Jerusalem).
